Nowadays you find it everywhere. When you’re shopping or even on the menu’s in restaurants: the term: “rich in protein”. People are starting to understand more and more that proteins are a big part of your daily nutritions. But what it exactly does except for “building muscle?”, is something that a lot of people or not yet aware of. Let's change that and tell you all about why we all need protein, how much and why plantbased!

So, what is protein?

Protein is what builds our bodies. We exist for roughly 12 kg of protein and our body replaces about 200-300 grams of the protein that is produced by our body on a daily base, in the liver and your intestines. Muscle tissue has a big impact on this. Proteins build up the cells in your body. Our organs can produce their own protein, so we don’t have to worry about those. It’s when we get our protein our of food, where it starts getting interesting.

As you might understand, our body exists for a large amount out of protein. Proteins from food have a different composition than the proteins made by our body’s and therefore have a different path in the body. Through the help of enzymes in our stomach they are made into peptides and in the intestines into amino-acids. These amino-acids are absorbed through the intestinal wall in the blood, where they in turn are used to build up the protein of every protein in every cell in the body. Roughly 70% of the amino-acids from our nutrition is used in this process and the rest will be pee’d out or turned into energy! This way your amazing body has managed to get protein from itself and from nutrition. Special right?

Functions of protein

As mentioned before apart from muscle building proteins have lots of other important functions within it body:

Transport: they play a crucial role in the absorption and transport of nutrients, the transport of oxygen and the absorption of protein itself.

Building material: they are the building material for every new cel in your body. Whenever your body is hurt or damages, you'll need protein to recover. This goes for your organs, bones, nervous system, blood, basically everything.

Enzymes are also protein. They ensure good digestion, absorption of nutrients and antibodies and play a big role in the production of hormones (very important!).

Neurotransmitters: amino acids are the precursors to neurotransmitters.They ensure that stimuli from your brain and nervous system are properly transferred. An example of this is dopamine or serotonin, for example.

Plantbased protein vs. animal based protein

It’s a common misconception that you can’t get enough of your proteins from vegetables, but that theory has been made untrue a long time ago. Many athletes have already made the switch to plant based protein shakes! YAY for them!

Important to understand is that what is most important when looking at proteins are the amino acids. We know 20 different amino acids of which 9 essential. The 9 essential amino acids are the only ones that the body can't produce and therefore always come from food. 

When looking into plantbased protein it is important to make sure you have a complete amino acids profile to supple your body with all the protein it needs. 

Making sure you add variety to your daily diet is one way. Add nuts, seeds, grains, legumes, pips, beans, lentils, chickpeas and seaweeds to your meals. Another way to make sure you get in all your protein is to add a protein shake powder to your daily routine. A portion of plantbased protein contains around 28 grams of proteins. Depending on your weight and intensity of exercise this already is a great amount!

How much protein do we need? 

On average people need 1-1,8 grams of protein per kilo that you weigh. Are you a super active person, then you should probably think closer towards the 1,8 grams. But most importantly: do whatever feels good for your body!
